The wooded part of the Podmaji-Mala Učka ridge is located at the crossroads of the peak ridge of Učka and its southwestern slopes. The organisation of the area was determined by the traditional hamlet of Podmaji, which in the past was a summer settlement. The sinkholes and fields located around the hamlet were enclosed with dry stone walls and used for the cultivation of hardy crops, while the rest of the area served as open pasture. With the abandonment of agriculture in more distant locations and thus the seasonal hamlets, the former agricultural land and pastures have now become completely overgrown with forest, which is the main feature of the area today.

Did you know?
During the summer grazing in the Senožeti area, the hamlet of Podmaji functioned as a summer settlement for families following their livestock. Given the quality grazing of the surrounding pastures, the people in Podmaji used to keep cows, which is indicated by the large barns in the hamlet. This was quite a rarity in the Učka area.
