The lower area of Potoška Vala includes the lower part of the canyon from the peak of Perun to the canyon mouth in Mošćenička Draga. The area can be experienced along the Through Potoška vala itinerary, which starts in Mošćenička Draga or Mošćenice.
A distinctive feature of the local relief is the deeply cut canyon, whose steep sides are characterised by occasional cliffs and scree, as well as caves and overhanging rocks. The natural extension of the streambed has been regulated in its lower part up to the mouth, even though, due to our modern-day climate, it is dry for most of the year.
Mošćenička Draga developed by the regulated part of the stream, on the fertile soil of once-cultivated fields, becoming a dominant feature of the entire area. Other traditional villages are located in the higher parts of the canyon where forests and Mediterranean macchia prevail. The sudden spread of macchia was a consequence of abandoning agricultural land, primarily the numerous dry stone terraces along which vines and other crops were once grown. Although mostly overgrown and neglected, the dry stone terraces are still one of the main attractions of the area.
The lower area of Potoška Vala abounds in natural and cultural attractions, which makes it one of the most distinctive canyons in the wider area. In addition to the villages and terraces, the attractiveness of the area is emphasised by its dramatic relief and lush vegetation.
